The first thing we will talk about is smoothness. Good music needs to be played without pauses in the wrong places, if it’s going to sound good. But when you’re practicing, you’re not giving a performance. You’re allowed to have pauses. The point in practicing is to iron out those pauses, so you don’t stumble over the notes and have to stop to work out where you are. By focusing on smoothness in your practice, you will be improving the continuity of the individual phrases within a piece of music, so when it comes to performing it… it will play smoothly. By focusing on smoothness in your playing, you will learn to use good fingering which will mean your musical phrases play unbrokenly. Practicing with smoothness in mind forces you to learn the best fingerings for the music you’re learning to play. In conclusion, it’s important to keep your attention on everything you’re doing when you learn piano. This will help you to learn much quicker, and you’ll get much more skilled in less practice time – which is perfect if you’ve got other responsibilities in your life. |
